The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission was created as an expert, technical agency to protect public health, safety, and security, and regulate the civilian use of nuclear materials, including enabling the deployment of nuclear power for the benefit of society. Among other responsibilities, the agency issues licenses, conducts inspections, initiates and enforces regulations, and plans for incident response. The global gold standard for nuclear regulation, the NRC is collaborating with interagency partners to implement reforms outlined in new Executive Orders and the ADVANCE Act to streamline agency activities and enhance efficiency.

NRC Chairman David Wright and Connecticut Gov. Edward Ned Lamont signed an agreement today giving Connecticut regulatory authority over certain radioactive materials in the state. Connecticut is the 40th state to sign such an agreement with the NRC.
The final agreement was published in the Federal Register on Sept. 29. The proposed agreement was published in the Federal Register on March 19, 2025, for four consecutive weeks for public comment. Under the agreement, effective Sept. 30, 2025, the NRC will transfer 104 specific licenses for radioactive material to Connecticuts jurisdiction. The NRC retains jurisdiction over Millstone 2 and 3 nuclear reactors, as well as other areas of exclusive federal jurisdiction.
Before entering into the agreement, the NRC determined that Connecticuts radiation control program is adequate to protect public health and safety and is compatible with the NRCs regulations.
