The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission was created as an expert, technical agency to protect public health, safety, and security, and regulate the civilian use of nuclear materials, including enabling the deployment of nuclear power for the benefit of society. Among other responsibilities, the agency issues licenses, conducts inspections, initiates and enforces regulations, and plans for incident response. The global gold standard for nuclear regulation, the NRC is collaborating with interagency partners to implement reforms outlined in new Executive Orders and the ADVANCE Act to streamline agency activities and enhance efficiency.
No: 25-053 September 11, 2025 CONTACT: Ivonne Couret, 301-415-8200 NRC to Host 2-Day Public Hybrid Workshop on Improving Realism in Probabilistic Risk Assessment Staff from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a two-day hybrid public workshop Sept. 30-Oct. 1 to discuss efforts to improve realism in probabilistic risk assessment.
The workshop will focus on enhancing risk-informed decision-making for nuclear power plants by making PRA models more realistic and reflective of reactor design, operations and real-world behavior.
PRA is a key tool the NRC uses to assess plant safety by estimating the likelihood and consequences of potential accidents. The workshop will highlight ongoing efforts to improve realism and will discuss topics such as operating experience, external hazards and human reliability analysis.
Stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the discussions, which will provide valuable input into the NRCs collaborative efforts to improve reactor safety through more accurate risk modeling.
For more information, visit the NRC website. Visitors who want to attend in person must email Michelle Gonzalez at Michelle.Gonzalez@nrc.gov to register and arrange access to NRC facilities.
