No: 25-069 December 19, 2025 CONTACT: Office of Public Affairs, 301-415-8200 NRC Names Mike King as Executive Director for Operations The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced today that Mike King has been named Executive Director for Operations, effective immediately. He had been serving as the acting EDO since June 29, 2025, and before that was on special assignment to the Office of the Executive Director for Operations as the Special Assistant for ADVANCE Act Implementation.
The EDO position is the highest-ranking NRC career position with responsibilities for overseeing the agencys operational and administrative functions and serving as the chief operating officer.
Mike has been a steady hand as acting EDO during this period of dynamic change, said NRC Chairman David Wright. My fellow Commissioners and I know Mike will continue to provide the agencys staff with excellent leadership as we continue our work to safely enable the use of new nuclear technologies for the nation.
King joined the NRC in 2005 under the Resident Inspector Development Program in the Region II office in Atlanta. He then held positions as a resident inspector at Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant in North Carolina, moving to team leader and branch chief roles in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation and in the Region II Office. In 2016, King was selected for the Senior Executive Service as Deputy Director, Division of Inspection and Regional Support in NRR. He later served as the Director of the Division of Fuel Cycle Safety, Safeguards, and Environmental Review in the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards. More recently, he returned to NRR as Director of the Vogtle Project Office and later as Deputy Office Director for Reactor Programs and Mission Support.
Before joining the NRC, King worked for General Electric Energy in Marietta, Georgia, and served in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear engineer qualified submarine officer.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission was created as an expert, technical agency to protect public health, safety, and security, and regulate the civilian use of nuclear materials, including enabling the deployment of nuclear power for the benefit of society. Among other responsibilities, the agency issues licenses, conducts inspections, initiates and enforces regulations, and plans for incident response. The global gold standard for nuclear regulation, the NRC is collaborating with interagency partners to implement reforms outlined in new Executive Orders and the ADVANCE Act to streamline agency activities and enhance efficiency.
Page l 2 King received a bachelors degree in electrical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, a masters degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and an MBA from George Washington University. He is a graduate of the NRC's SES Candidate Development Program.
