The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission was created as an expert, technical agency to protect public health, safety, and security, and regulate the civilian use of nuclear materials, including enabling the deployment of nuclear power for the benefit of society. Among other responsibilities, the agency issues licenses, conducts inspections, initiates and enforces regulations, and plans for incident response. The global gold standard for nuclear regulation, the NRC is collaborating with interagency partners to implement reforms outlined in new Executive Orders and the ADVANCE Act to streamline agency activities and enhance efficiency.
No: 26-007 January 12, 2026 CONTACT: Ivonne Couret, 301-415-8200 Registration Open for NRC Jan. 28 Standards Forum The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will host the second meeting of the 2025 NRC Standards Forum on Jan. 28 as a hybrid event. This session will focus on detailed discussions of codes and standards activities, building on stakeholder perspectives shared during the first meeting earlier this year. Since 2016, the agency has held this annual forum to facilitate strategic discussions on codes and standards needs and priorities, accelerate the development of new standards, and enhance the NRCs endorsement process.
The forum provides a venue for nuclear community stakeholders to deliberate on collaborative methods to enhance safety-oriented standards amid a changing landscape, said Christian Araguas, director of the Division of Engineering in the NRCs Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research.
The meeting will feature sessions on improving efficiencies in codes and standards endorsement, identifying needs and priorities for commercial standards, exploring innovative approaches to quality assurance, and advancing risk-informed codes and standards development.
The forum will conclude with an open discussion to capture action items and outline next steps.
The Standards Forum is designed as an interactive meeting that brings together a broad range of participants, including standards development organizations such as ACI, AISC, ANS, ASCE, ASME, and IEEE; industry representatives; international regulators; research organizations; academia; members of the public; and NRC staff from the Offices of Nuclear Regulatory Research and Nuclear Reactor Regulation.
Hosted by the NRCs Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research, the meeting is open to all interested stakeholders. It will run from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Eastern at the Two White Flint North Auditorium, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland, and will also be available virtually via Microsoft Teams.
