1. Physical form:

The radioactive content is made up of uranium oxides (UO2, UO3 or U3O8) in powder, pellet or fragment form.

The surface of pellets can be covered with polycarbonate coating (C16H14O3 - less hydrogenated than water), some of coating could flake off.

2. Isotopic composition and maximum permissible masses The radioactive content may contain gadolinium and erbium in unlimited quantities, additives in limited quantity when more hydrogenated than water, impurities with the following limits:

Impurity Maximum content (ppm)

Al 5,000 C

17,000 Zn 5,000 Al + C + Ca + Mg + Cl + Cr + Co + Cu + F + Fe +

Pb + Ni + N + P + Si + Ta + Th + Sn + V + Zn 30 000 Other impurities do not exceed the limits in table 1 of standard ASTM C753 - 16.a published on 01/04/2016.

The maximum activity of the content does not exceed 1 A2. The radioactive content may meet the definition of unirradiated uranium given in Article 246 of the above-mentioned Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material No. SSR-6.

or be contaminated uranium not compliant with the definition of unirradiated uranium and in this the consignor is responsible to check that the activity of the content does not exceed 1 A2.

The maximum permissible mass of uranium oxides per cavity (divided into three pails) of the packaging is defined by the maximum enrichment rate of the 235U, its physical form and its density, as shown below.

Case A: mass of additives more hydrogenated than water does not exceed 390 g to E-65184 Page 6 of 7 Physical form UO2, UO3, U3O8 (no pellets allowed)

UO2, UO3, U3O8 (pellets allowed)

Maximum density 4 g/cm3 10.96 g/cm3 Maximum enrichment by mass (e = 235U/Utot)

Maximum enrichment by mass (e = 235U/Utot) 4.15%

75.0 kg 60.0 kg 4.45%

64.5 kg 39.5 kg 39.5 kg 4.65%

58.5 kg 4.85%

53.5 kg 5%

52.0 kg Case B: mass of additives more hydrogenated than water does not exceed 1,000 g Physical form UO2, UO3, U3O8 (no pellets allowed)

UO2, UO3, U3O8 (pellets allowed)

Maximum density 4 g/cm3 10.96 g/cm3 Maximum enrichment by mass (e = 235U/Utot) 2.2%

75.0 kg 75.0 kg 5%

52.0 kg 38.0 kg Case C: mass of additives more hydrogenated than water does not exceed 1,620 g Physical form UO2, UO3, U3O8 (no pellets allowed)

Maximum density 4 g/cm3 Maximum enrichment by mass (e = 235U/Utot) 4.15%

75.0 kg 4.55%

66.0 kg 5%

46.0 kg If any, for the compliance with the limit of 1 A2, the maximum permissible mass of contaminated uranium complies with the limit mass defined according to Appendix 0A.2 of chapter 0A taking into account the real isotopic composition of the content.

The total mass of the content (pails, shimming system, bags and radioactive material) in all the cavities does not exceed 386 kg, without causing the maximum permissible mass of the packaging loaded for transport, laid down in Appendix 0, to be exceeded.

3. Packing The material is placed in two bags (one inside the other) made of materials that may have a greater hydrogen content than water. Each bag is closed by a tie wrap or a wire, or a vinyl tape or by heating sealing.

The bagged material is placed in internal primary containers, which are the pails (three for each of the four cavities) meeting the criteria in the table below.

Each pail is fitted with a ring, the characteristics of which are set out in the table below.

Nominal height (mm)

Minimum thickness (mm)

Each cavity shall have a spacer system consisting of:

a centering system placed at the bottom of the cavity, one or more top spacer(s) placed on top of the three pails to provide less than 10 mm of clearance between the content and the closing system of the packaging.
