The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has received an application from Southern Nuclear Operating Co., Inc. (SNC) for the Subsequent License Renewal (SLR) for Edwin I.
Hatch Nuclear Plant (HNP) Units 1 and 2, pursuant to NRC operating license (OCs) DRP-57 and NPF-5, respectively under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 54 Requirements for Renewal of Operating Licenses for Nuclear Power Plants requesting the issuance of renewed operating license(s) for an additional 20 years. The NRC staff is conducting an environmental review of the application in accordance with 10 CFR Part 51, Environmental Protection Regulations for Domestic Licensing and Related Regulatory Functions, which implements the requirements of theNational Environmental Policy Act of 1969, as amended (NEPA). The NRC staff is using the NEPA process to satisfy its National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 review in accordance with 36 CFR 800.8(c).
Since no sites, buildings, or structures have been determined NRHP-eligible at HNP, activities associated with operations and maintenance would have no impact on historic and cultural resources. Therefore, the NRC staff has made a preliminary determination of no historic properties affected, pursuant to 36 CFR 800.4(d)(1). The NRC staff has documented this conclusion and additional information related to the SLR in the historic and cultural resources section of an environmental assessment of the SLR application, which is available for review here: https://www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/licensing/renewal/applications/hatch-subsequent.
The NRC staff is soliciting comments on the NRCs Section 106 finding and the cultural resources information contained at the above link. Please submit comments by March 3, 2026, to Ashley Waldron, Project Manager (Ashley.Waldron@nrc.gov).
