Mr. Ted H. Sonnenburg, Director Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control Utah Department of Environmental Quality PO Box 144810 Salt Lake City, UT 84114-4810
Dear Mr. Sonnenburg:
Thank you for your letter dated October 3, 2025, requesting the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) consider expanding Utahs agreement to include regulatory oversight of conversion facilities. The NRC is currently evaluating this request and will coordinate with Utahs Department of Environmental Quality and other applicable agencies on this topic. The NRC plans to meet with Utah by March 2026. The NRC acknowledges Utahs strong regulatory program and partnership to ensure safe and secure use of radioactive materials across the National Materials Program.
We look forward to your continued engagement on this topic. Please contact Adelaide Giantelli (Adelaide.Giantelli@nrc.gov) with any additional questions.
Sincerely, Andrea Kock, Director Office of Nuclear Materials Safety and Safeguards cc: D. Silberfeld, NMSS February 18, 2026 Signed by Kock, Andrea on 02/18/26
