UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 MEMORANDUM TO:

Diane Jackson, Chief Material Control and Accounting Branch Division of Fuel Management Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards FROM:

Kristina L. Banovac, Alternate Contracting Officer Representative Storage and Transportation Licensing Branch Division of Fuel Management Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards

SUBJECT:

CENTER FOR NUCLEAR WASTE REGULATORY ANALYSES STAFF TECHNICAL REPORTS ON FEATURES, EVENTS, AND PROCESSES FOR DISPOSAL OF ADVANCED REACTOR SPENT FUEL The Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses (CNWRA) staff delivered two technical reports completed under Contract No. 31310023D0004, Tasks 2 and 3 of Task Order No.

31310024F0109, Features, Events, and Processes for Disposal of Advanced Reactor Spent Fuel. The objective of this task order is to obtain technical support from the CNWRA in identifying and ranking the risk significance of key features, events, and processes (FEPs) related to the geologic disposition of Advance Reactor Spent Fuel (ARSF).

The enclosed reports provide critical information to help in assessing current U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory frameworks as related to the disposal of ARSF and assist in understanding how best to position the NRC to support any potential U.S. national ARSF geological disposal program.

1.

Task 2 Report, Advanced Reactor Spent Fuel Geologic Disposal Technical Issues, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System [ADAMS] Accession No. ML25357A177) documents and summarizes those FEPs that may be important to issues associated with the disposal of ARSF in a geologic repository. The report investigates potential technical issues related to the geologic disposal of ARSF, focusing on tri-structural isotropic fuels, metal fuels, and molten salt fuels.
