ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Supplemental SHX Information DBHE Description The design of the SHXs is currently in the conceptual design phase. Several heat exchanger designs have been considered and studied in detail (i.e-Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers, Shell and Plate Heat Exchangers, Perimeter Welded Plate Heat Exchangers, Fin and Plate Heat Exchangers, etc.). The SHX design that has been selected is an etched diusion bonded heat exchanger (DBHE).

DBHEs are also referred to as printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs), as the channel layout process is similar to that of printed circuit boards. These DBHEs are manufactured by a chemical etching process for the channels in metal plates and then combined using the diusion bonding process. The DBHEs are compact heat exchangers that can sustain high dierenal pressures at elevated temperatures, while maintaining high thermal eecveness.

Diusion bonding is a solid state welding process that bonds two contacng surfaces through the applicaon of heat and pressure in a vacuum environment. The process is performed at elevated temperatures (typically 70-80% of the melng point) and at moderate pressures (700-1400 psi). The plate surfaces merge by a diusion process.
