Meeting Summary:
On September 4, 2025, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a public meeting with Energy Northwest New Nuclear (ENNN) staff to discuss two white papers related to the future small modular reactor project; Methodology for Determining the Acceptability of Historical Information and Acceptability of Historical Information - Flooding.
The main points of discussion during the meeting included:
Reviewing the purpose of the meeting:
o To engage early with NRC staff on ENNNs approach of using historical flooding information from a colocated licensed nuclear facility o To identify technical or policy issues that might affect this approach o To ensure predictability in the NRCs response to ENNNs future construction permit application related to flooding hazard analysis Project background Flood hazard mechanisms and methodology for determining applicability of historical information were discussed for Local Intense Precipitation (LIP), Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) (local basin), PMF (streams and rivers), Dam Breaches and Failure, Channel Migration, Ice Effects, Tsunami, Seiche, Storm Surge, and Combined Effects.
Based on the proposed criteria for acceptability LIP will require a site-specific evaluation for water surface evaluation.
No regulatory decisions were made as a result of this meeting.
