Docket, Hearing
Subject:
[External_Sender] Docket No: 50-255 l License No. DPR-20 Date:
Monday, September 15, 2025 8:38:39 AM Direct submission of this Limited Appearance Statement was allowed by the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, Initial Prehearing Order (ASLBP No.
25-990-02-LA-BD01, Docket No. 50-255-LA-5, August 5, 2025)
(ML25217A517).Please ensure that the safety measures that have been delayed for years be put in place immediately. There should not be another delay. The lives of those in the nearby area are at stake.
I am one of those people living in close proximity to the aging facility at Palisades. The fire protection upgraded are already long overdue and must be implemented as soon as possible to protect the health and safety of area residents. The protection of Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes depends on the utmost safety precautions being in place before the plant reopens. Contamination of the Lake Michigan could irrevocably change the safety of our fresh water supply.
The health and safety of Michigan residents would be jeopardized in case of fire or loss of cooling.
Holtec and the NRC need to adhere to the longstanding safety regulations that are in place at other facilities.
Until the fireprotection safeguards are in place, there should no no loading of fuel or restart of the plant at Palisades.
Riskmodel analyses are not sufficient forevaluation. Accident-based analysis is not sufficient and the NRC should not allow Holtec to have leniency in providing and incomplete filing. Palisades should be the safest nuclear plant in the country. If disaster stuck, it would be a halt to the reopening of other antiquated facilities.
Please require enforcement of the fire safety protections that are vital to preserving the health of the public and success of Palisades Nuclear Power Plant.
Yours truly, Claudia Somes MD
