I have spent part of every year of my life less than 1 mile from the Holtec nuclear power plant in Covert MI. Since retiring in 2008, I have spent approximately 6 months per year in my home there. I met and married my husband there and our children visit every summer.
I and my whole community have become increasingly concerned about the push to quickly reopen a plant that we have known has put off safety updates for decades because of its planned closure. Now we are anticipating a rapid reopening that is being pushed way too fast. Not only are the safety issues whose remediation was tabled because of planned closure not being addressed, now new issues have cropped up due to the fact that the plant was inactive after closure.
This piling on of safety concerns at a nuclear power plant right next door is making all of us very very nervous for our continued safety. Now, we are told that Fire Protection Safety Upgrades have been ignored and are not slated to be remediated.
I am requesting that the current industry Fire Protection Safety Standards be applied
& adhered to at this location for the protection & safety of life of the surrounding public citizens.
