Dear Representative Garcia:
On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your August 15, 2025, letter regarding the need to clarify how the NRC will dutifully uphold our nation's federal oversight and Inspector General (IG) laws. In accordance with the 1988 amendments to the Inspector General Act of 1978, the NRC's Office of Inspector General (OIG) was established on April 15, 1989, as an independent and objective unit to conduct and supervise audits, evaluations, and investigations relating to the NRC's programs and operations. The purpose of the OIG's audits, evaluations, and investigations is to prevent and detect fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement, and promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness, in NRC programs and operations. In addition, the OIG reviews existing and proposed regulations, legislation, and directives, and comments on any significant concerns.
As the Chairman of the NRC, I am steadfast in my commitment to work closely with NRC's IG, Mr. Robert Feitel, to ensure the integrity of NRC programs and operations and to work collaboratively to address OIG findings and implement corrective actions. In Mr. Feitel's most recent Semiannual Report to Congress issued on May 23, 2025, the report highlights the cooperation NRC's OIG has received from my staff, both as a Commissioner and as the Chairman. As Chairman of the NRC, I will continue to uphold our nation's federal oversight and IGlaws.
