ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20545 J. F. o*reary, Director Directorate cf Licensing ACRS REVIEW OF WATTS BAR Ea:S r,<.a,y 17, 197 4 Durin;J its 169th Meeting, May 9-11, 1974, the ACRS discussed the possibility of cond.uctiDJ a review of the final design of the watts Bar Emergency Core Cool.irxJ Systan in connection with its re-view of Sequoyah. Units 1 ani 2, as proposed by the applicant.
The Ccmnittee had origina.lly recarmended, in its report of Septanber 21, 1972, that a review of the Watts Bar ECCS be carrie:l out by the Regulatory Staff and the ACRS prior to fabrication an:1 installation of rrajor canponents far the watts Bar Station.
Since TVA has stated in its letter to you of April 29, 1974, that final design, fabrication, ani system construction for Watts Bar are roil un:ierway, the Cormittee corx:lu:led that review of Sequoyah is too far in the future (May 1975} to be carrpatible with its original recarmerxlation.
It appears that this review should be scheduled on a nore e."q)e:lited basis either as a generic review for this class of reactor or as part of a specific project review.
