ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 February 9, 1976 Honorable William A. Anders Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory COtlDilission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Anders:
The ACRS has received your letter of January 13, 1976, which provides guidance to the Committee concerning the four generic issues on which ACRS review and comment have been request~d by the Commission.
The Committee is pleased to participate in these activities and will make every effort to provide its comments in accordance with the proposed schedule.
As you know, evaluation of the NRC regulatory and licensing programs in terms of the proposed national effort for long-term nuclear waste manage-ment will depend on the availability of information from several other agencies, particularly ERDA.
If complete information is not available prior to the July 1976 suggested deadline, the ACRS will provide its com-ments on this subject in the form of an interim report.
It is possible that timely review by the Committee of these issues may re-quire some delay in the review of several project applications tentatively scheduled for review during 1976. If this should be the case, the need for schedule changes will be discussed with the NRC staff in order to minimize the effects on project schedules to the extent practical.
The increased workload of generic reviews also makes it imperative to main-tain the ACRS membership at or near its statutory level of 15 and to main-tain the ACRS staff at the level necessary to provide required technical and management support.
The Committee is giving urgent attention to its needs in light of the existing vacancy and will provide recommendations to you in the near future.
In addition, the Committee urgently requests that four additional staff positions (3 professional, 1 secretarial) be authorized for the ACRS office to provide the increased level of staff support needed by the Committee to fulfill these obligations.
2239 Sincerely yours,
- ~cul.tV,~
