SUBJECT:
NRC OFFICE OF 'NUCLEAR REGULATORY RESEARCH RECOMMEl\\1DATIOOS CN ECC BYPASS RESEARCH
Dear Mr. Gossick:
During the 220th meeting, August 3-5, 1978, the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards was briefed by members of the NRC Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research and the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation re-garding future research on ECC Bypass.
The ECCS Subcommittee met with the NRC Staff on July 17-18, 1978, to discuss this program.
The NRC Staff repo:ted its conclusion that a new, large test facility is not now needed for research in this area.
'lhis conclusion has taken into account plans to upgrade present programs with in-;proved instn.1:11enta-tion and higher steam pressures, basic physics tests, increased sensitivity studies with TRAC, and data from the Upper Plenum 'I*est Facility in the 2D/3D program.
The Committee agreed with this c0nclusion.
~~
Executive Director, ACRS 2078
