Dave Gasperson, 404-997-4417 NRC Schedules Open House to Discuss Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant Performance Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold an open house May 15 to discuss the 2024 safety performance of the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant. The four-unit plant is located near Waynesboro, Georgia, and is operated by Southern Nuclear.
The event will run from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Eastern time at the Plant Vogtle Visitor Support Center, 7821 River Road, in Waynesboro. NRC staff responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will be available to answer questions about plant safety and the NRCs oversight role.
The NRC concluded that all four units at Vogtle operated safely in 2024. Units 1, 2, and 4 remained under the agencys normal level of oversight, which includes thousands of inspection hours each year. Unit 3 was under increased oversight for part of the year because it had more unplanned shutdowns with complications than allowed under the NRCs Reactor Oversight Process.
The unit returned to normal oversight in March after NRC inspectors confirmed the company is appropriately addressing the issue.
The NRCs Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to assess plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow, or red depending on the safety significance of the issue. Findings with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.
The annual assessment letters for Vogtle Units 1 & 2 and Units 3 & 4, including upcoming inspection plans, are available on the NRC website. Current performance information for each unit is also available and updated quarterly.
