[External_Sender] The Point Beach Nuclear Reactor To the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
I am writing to urge you in the strongest terms NOT to relicense the owners of the Point Beach nuclear reactor in the Lake Superior region of Wisconsin. Of the many reasons I believe relicensing would be undesirable, the following are among the most important:
1a. This reactor is over 40 years old. During the normal operation of a nuclear reactor, the containment vessel is constantly bombarded with neutrons. This bombardment progressively weakens the steel in said containment capsule, and after a decade or two this creates a highly dangerous situation, in which the normal process of using water to cool the reactor can rupture this surrounding structure and cause a devastating release of radiation, and in some cases a meltdown. (This is exactly what happened in the Fukazawa reactor in Japan; the tsunami poured cold water over it, causing an explosion and a subsequent meltdown. We need to learn from history, so we are not doomed to repeat it!)
1b. As climate change progresses, with its concomitant extreme weather, some facets of that weather, such as torrential rains and flooding,
- 2. The waste generated by a nuclear reactor - especially in the control rods - remains radioactive for thousands of years, There is no safe level of radioactivity; any amount is a threat to all animals (including humans) in its vicinity, and the higher that level, the more cancers and unnecessary deaths will result. There has so far never been any known way of disposing of the massive amount of radioactive waste generate during the operation of such a reactor.
- 3. The Point Beach reactor is located on the shore of Lake Michigan. Water from the lake is used to cool the reactor (a major reason for locating it there) and returned to the lake significantly warmer than before. This is a threat to fish and other life forms in that region of one of our Great Lakes!
For all these reasons I firmly believe that relicensing this reactor would be inadvisable and inimical to the interests of people in the area and even the rest of the United States and beyond, given the danger of a meltdown and that radioactive materials in the atmosphere can be and are carried far and wide.
PLEASE DECLINE THE APPLICATION FOR RELICENSING!
Sincerely,
Richard L. Pollak RickPoll@yahoo.com
