Dave Gasperson, 404-997-4417 NRC to Discuss Two-Year Safety Review of NFS Erwin Facility at Public Meeting The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting May 7 to discuss the results of its two-year safety performance review of the Nuclear Fuel Services fuel fabrication facility in Erwin, Tennessee.
The meeting will run from 6-7 p.m. Eastern time at the Unicoi County Courthouse, 100 N. Main Ave., in Erwin. The meeting will include a short presentation on the results of the safety performance review, followed by a question-and-answer session.
The NRC review covered NFSs performance from Jan. 1, 2023, through Dec. 31, 2024.
Staff from the agencys Atlanta regional office and headquarters evaluated safety operations, safeguards, radiological controls, facility support, and other areas. The team concluded that NFS continued to operate safely and securely, in a manner that protects public health and the environment.
NRC inspectors identified four low-significance findings, two in safety operations and two in safeguards. The findings did not require additional oversight or affect the agencys overall conclusion.
A senior NRC inspector is assigned full time to the Erwin facility to provide daily oversight, with support from regional specialists who conduct additional inspections throughout the year.
A copy of the agencys performance review letter to NFS is available on the NRC website.
