SUBJECT:
STATUS OF RECOMMENDATIONS: AUDIT REPORT OF THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSIONS SECURITY OVERSIGHT OF CATEGORY 1 AND CATEGORY 2 QUANTITIES OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS (OIG-24-A-06)
The Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards staff continues to make progress on meeting the completion dates for reviewing and updating the informal guidance (i.e., the memo Retirement of the Materials Security Issues Forum Process, issued January 5, 2018, Agencywide Documents and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML17318A056 (non-public)) and collaborating with the Office of Enforcement on updates to the Enforcement Manual and Policy regarding the Audit Report of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions Security, Oversight of Category 1 and Category 2 Quantities of Radioactive Materials (OIG-24-A-06). Specifically, the staff proposed updates to the Enforcement Manual and Policy based on data analysis of previously issued enforcement actions and lessons learned from approximately 10 years of implementation and inspections of 10 CFR Part 37, Physical Protection of Category 1 and Category 2 Quantities of Radioactive Material requirements. Agency review and concurrence of this draft version of the policy is currently underway. Following this step, the document will be issued for public comment via a Federal Register notice. The status of recommendations 1.1 and 1.3 remain open: resolved.
