U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION (NRC) STAFF REVIEW OF THE MARCH 2025, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY - OFFICE OF LEGACY MANAGEMENT, PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT REPORT FOR PORE WATER DISCHARGE ONTO THE RIFLE, COLORADO, DISPOSAL SITE (WM-00062)
Dear Ms. Young:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is writing in response to the U.S.
Department of Energy, Office of Legacy Management (DOE-LM) document entitled, Preliminary Assessment Report for Pore Water Discharge onto the Rifle, Colorado, Disposal Site, dated March 3, 2025, (Received March 4, 2025; Agencywide Documents Access and Management System [ADAMS] Accession No. ML25063A141). The submittal describes the DOE-LM response to the January 20, 2025, freeze event which resulted in several of the new extraction wells knocked out of service, as well as broken extraction system transmission discharge lines, and a pore water discharge volume of approximately 690 gallons on the disposal cell surface. DOE-LM confirmed that the discharge did not exceed regulatory reporting requirements. All 10 of the new extraction wells and both standpipes were fully operational as of February 12, 2025.
NRC has no comments or questions on the submittal. We look forward to the scheduled Extraction System Update meeting on March 24, 2025.
