LR-E25-0033_Sturgeon Fin Clips_Analysis_Lab Agreement to NMFS.pdf Good Morning, Pursuant to Terms and Conditions (T&C) #9, #20, and #30 of the Salem and Hope Creek Biological Opinion and Incidental Take Permit, PSEG must collect fin clips during incidental takes of any shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon and submit to a NMFS-approved lab for analysis to determine the distinct population segments (DPS) (for Atlantic sturgeon) or river of origin (for shortnose sturgeon).

NMFS provided a list of suitable laboratories to PSEG on February 11, 2025. The attached letter memorializes PSEGs commitment to submit collected fin clips annually by March 1st to the USGS Leetown Science Center for analysis as part of Biological Opinion GAR 2020-02842.

The most recent shipment of 106 sturgeon fin clips was received by USGS on March 6, 2025.

SEND VIA EMAIL March 13, 2025 LR-E25-0033 EEP25016 National Marine Fisheries Service Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office ATTN: Section 7 Coordinator 55 Great Republic Drive Gloucester, MA 01930 Nmfs.gar.incidental-take@noaa.gov SALEM AND HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATIONS BIOLOGICAL OPINION GAR 2020-02842 ATLANTIC & SHORTNOSE STURGEON FIN CLIP ANALYSIS The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) concluded formal consultation under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973, as amended, on April 17, 2023, with NMFSs issuance of a biological opinion and incidental take statement (ITS) for continued operation of Salem and Hope Creek Generating Stations. Pursuant to Terms and Conditions (T&C) #9,

  1. 20, and #30, PSEG must collect fin clips during incidental takes of any shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon and submit to a NMFS-approved lab for analysis to determine the distinct population segments (DPS) (for Atlantic sturgeon) or river of origin (for shortnose sturgeon).

NMFS provided a list of suitable laboratories to PSEG on February 11, 2025. This letter memorializes PSEGs commitment to submit collected fin clips annually by March 1st to the USGS Leetown Science Center for analysis as part of Biological Opinion GAR 2020-02842. USGS will provide results from fin clip analysis as soon as reasonably possible depending on workload and backlog of samples from other projects. PSEG will communicate the results of the fin clip DNA analysis within 30 days of receiving them from USGS.

The most recent shipment, to Robin Johnson, occurred on March 5, 2025. 106 sturgeon fin clips were shipped to the USGS Leetown Science Center for processing.
