SUMMARY

Meeting

Title:

ONR CNSC NRC Human Factors Approaches Meeting Dates: 03/06/2025 - 03/06/2025 Visited or Visiting Country: Canada; UK - This meeting took place virtually.

Participant(s):

Brian Green Niav Hughes Green Edward Nakaza Clive Tunley Richard Screeton Meeting Summary:

Representatives from each organization provided brief presentations about how human factors is handled within their organization. Topics included regulatory bases, scope of reviews, technical processes and approaches, summaries of recent experience, and anticipated future projects.

Results Achieved:

Staff better understand global approaches to human factors; similarities and differences between these approaches became apparent. Some countries have certain experiences that are not available in other countries (for instance, the US staff have recent experience with new reactor construction inspection that is not available in Canada).

NRC can learn from the safety case approach discussed by the UK representative. This approach bears some similarity to the processes staff recently wrote in to ISG-DRO-2023-03.

Additional learning in this area may be helpful as advanced reactor reviews commence.

Pending Actions, Next Steps, and Commitments:

There are several anticipated licensing reviews that will be conducted between all three countries (X-energy, BWRX-300, AP300 etc.) A future meeting will be scheduled to explore specific potential efficiencies between the countries.
