Status Update - Palisades Request for Reauthorization of Power Operations Good morning, We are sending out this email to keep NHPA Section 106 consulting parties informed about the status of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRCs) environmental review of the potential reauthorization of power operations at the Palisades Nuclear Plant (Palisades).
Palisades is located in Van Buren County, Michigan, along the shore of Lake Michigan, approximately 2.5 miles northwest of Covert Township. As discussed in previous correspondence, the NRC is conducting National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 consultation through the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) process per 36 CFR 800.8(c).
In our last status update (dated December 19, 2024 - See attached), we provided a summary of the NRC and DOE LPO staff outreach activities for the Palisades restart project and notified the consulting Tribes of the forthcoming issuance of the draft environmental assessment (EA) and Tribal Information Meeting. Our initial goal was to issue the draft EA towards the middle of January, but that has moved to January 31st.
As a result, the NRC and DOE LPO staff would like to reschedule the January 30th Tribal Information Meeting to February 11, 2025 to allow the parties time to review the draft EA. The presentation will provide an overview of the draft EA and draft FONSI. This meeting is not open to the public and is intended to afford Tribal representatives an opportunity to discuss with NRC and DOE LPO staff the draft EA and ask questions. This meeting will not be recorded or transcribed. As noted in our December 19th email, the NRC will send a Teams scheduler for this information meeting in a separate communication.
