V.C. Summer Nuclear Station Current Performance vs.

Subsequent License Renewal January 28, 2025

Current Operations Until 2042

  • Summer is operating safely and is meeting NRC requirements for effluent releases and environmental monitoring
  • Resident inspectors at the site throughout the year
  • Radiation safety specialists inspect environmental programs every three years
  • Summer is currently in year 42 of its 60-year license

- The subsequent license renewal process is a request to extend the 60-year license to 80 years and this would not come into effect until 2042 2

Current Operations Until 2042

  • Resident inspectors hold an Annual Meeting at McCrorey Liston school around April/May to discuss the sites regulatory performance, including violations in the previous year
  • Resident inspectors have created sheets for you to take home with links to get more information 3

Asking for NRC Action at V.C. Summer

  • File a request for enforcement action (referred to as a 2.206 Petition), with supporting evidence

- What requirement isnt being met

- What action should the NRC take, immediate or long-term

  • NRC response on immediate action within weeks
  • NRC response on long-term requests within a few months

  • If you have safety concerns regarding current performance, you can submit those to the NRC at anytime and they are handled under a separate allegations process

- https://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/regulatory/allegations-resp.html 4

Asking for NRC Rule Changes

  • File a request for a new rule or revising an existing rule, with supporting evidence

- Longer process, if agency finds the request meets requirements
