Tribal Site Visit and Information Meeting - Palisades Request for Reauthorization of Power Operations Good afternoon, Thank you for attending our Tribal information meeting on July 16, 2024, and for your comments regarding the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRCs) environmental review of the potential reauthorization of power operations at the Palisades Nuclear Plant (Palisades).
Palisades is located in Van Buren County, Michigan, along the shore of Lake Michigan, approximately 2.5 miles northwest of Covert Township. As discussed in previous correspondence, the NRC is conducting National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 consultation through the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) process per 36 CFR 800.8(c).
Based on interest expressed by Tribes, the NRC staff would like to offer a site visit and meeting at the Palisades site either during the weeks of September 9, 2024, or September 16, 2024. If you would let us know which week works best for your schedule by August 30, 2024, we would appreciate it. If you are unable to travel to the site, the meeting will allow for virtual participation at the conclusion of the onsite tour portion of the agenda.
The NRC is interested in obtaining information from Tribes regarding the proposed project/undertaking, understanding your preferred methods of communication, and identifying any other comments or concerns you would like to discuss. The staff will prepare a draft agenda and send it to you for review and comment. Also, for those who were unable to attend the July 16th meeting, the NRC staff can provide an overview of the proposed project and NRCs environmental review process.
Please let us know if you have any environmental concerns in addition to NHPA Section 106 (historic properties) or historic and cultural resources considered under the NEPA, so we can arrange for knowledgeable technical staff to participate.
In addition, please let us know if you would prefer this to be a staff-level meeting or if representatives of your Tribal government will be attending. Thank you for taking the time to consult with NRC. We look forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts during this process.
