Dear Ms. Higgins :

UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 April 18, 2001 Thank you for your concern expressed about Private Fuel Storage, LLC sent to Chairman Meserve and Commissioners Dicus, Diaz, McGaffigan and Merrifield. The Commission has been advised of your correspondence. As an independent regulator, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission decision on the application to store spent nuclear fuel in a facility on the reservation of the Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians will be guided solely by the governing standards for protection of public health, safety and the environment. We strive to carry out our review and decision-making process through a deliberate, public process including numerous public meetings and other opportunities to participate in a meaningful way.

Your comments are important to us and we thank you for providing your comments.

Dear Commissioners,

I strongly urge you to deny Private Fuel Storage a license to construct a nuclear waste dump on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah. The fact that 8 utilities con literally buy their way into building a private dump without any liability for accidents is a moral and scientific outrage. The nuclear industry is trying to find a political solution to a deadly environmental problem by targeting Native lands. Plus, the dump endangers all Americans by initiating the moss transportation of nuclear waste across the country to Utah. A license for the project would be a frightening injustice.

Dear Mr. Babbit,

Before you leave office as Secretary of the Interior you have the opportunity to do something just and right. I urge you ta institute a moratorium on killing buffalo outside Yellowstone National Park and involve Tribes and Native peoples in management decisions effecting the herd. The final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) includes capture and slaughter of buffalo in all of the alternatives. Killing any additional buffalo is unacceptable and unnecessary. You can leave a different legacy for the Department of Interior, Native peoples and the buffalo.

Please take action to undo past injustice.

I strongly urge you la deny Private Fuel Storage o license ta construct a nuclear waste dump on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah. The fact that 8 utilities can literally buy their way into building a private dump without any liability for accidents is a moral and scientific outrage.
