- Hello, I have been a California resident all my life, and I remember the blackouts in the early 2000s. Reducing the supply of electricity can have serious consequences such as the return of blackouts. The Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant provides a significant amount of power and helps meet the needs of the residents of this state.
Diablo Canyon also has the added benefit of being a clean source of energy. When the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station was shut down, there was an increase in pollution due to the usage of natural gas plants. Nuclear power is the superior option when it comes to battling climate change and reducing pollution that affects many Californians.
Further, Diablo Canyon provides many economic benefits as well. From employing plant personnel directly to hiring outside contractors and vendors, many Californians, including me, make their living thanks to this industry. This does not even cover the benefits of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and electric vehicles, which heavily depend on large amounts of electricity being available. A lot of companies that are at the forefront of those technologies are based in California, so it would be natural for them to want to research and develop those technologies here. We need to be prepared to handle and capitalize on these opportunities.
Because of these reasons, I believe it is in our best collective interests to allow Diablo Canyon to continue operating.
