No: 24-083 December 11, 2024 CONTACT: Office of Public Affairs, 301-415-8200 NRC Names Andrea Kock as New Region I Administrator The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced the appointment of Andrea Kock as the Region I Administrator in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Kock has been serving as Deputy Office Director for Engineering in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation.
Kock succeeds Ray Lorson, who is retiring. Her appointment becomes effective Dec. 29.
Andrea has incredible experience in a variety of roles across the agency and has proven her leadership abilities and vision, said NRC Executive Director for Operations Mirela Gavrilas. She has shown tremendous commitment to technical and managerial excellence with a significant focus on recruitment in the nuclear industry.
NRCs Region I office is responsible for the inspection and safety assessment of 20 operating nuclear power reactors at 12 sites in the Northeast. Region I covers 20 states and the District of Columbia, overseeing the inspection and licensing of medical, academic, and industrial users of radioactive materials. Seventeen of those states are Agreement States, which have entered into an agreement with the NRC to implement a materials inspection and licensing program.
Kock joined the NRC in 1996 as a radiation specialist in Region III and served in progressively more responsible positions including as a Commissioners Technical Assistant for Materials and in a number of first line supervisor positions in the former Office of Federal, State, Materials, and Environmental Management programs and the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation. In 2014, she joined the Senior Executive Service as Deputy Division Director for Site Safety and Environmental Analysis in the then-Office of New Reactors. Later, she served in a variety of executive positions in the Office of Nuclear Materials Safety and Safeguards, including Director of the Divisions of Fuel Management and Materials, Safety, Security, State, and Tribal Programs.
Prior to joining the NRC, Kock was a Department of Energy Health Physics Fellow. She earned a bachelors degree in biology and psychology and a masters degree in environmental health science with a concentration in radiological health from the University of Michigan. She is a graduate of NRCs Leadership Potential Program and the SES Candidate Development Program.
