Commissioner Bradford Thomas J. McTiernan, Director Office of Inspector and Auditor GAO REVIEW OF THE ALLEGED NUMEC DIVERSION We were informed today by the GAO staff that Congressman Dingell, Chairman, Subcommittee on Energy and Power, Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, has asked GAO to "initiate an immediate and com-prehensive investigation to determine the extent and contents of intelligence and safeguards information regarding a possible diversion of highly enriched material from NUMEC and the extent to which this vital information was provided to ERDA and NRC for their use in assuring the protection of nuclear materials in this country."
In regard to this request, Congressman Dingell has specifically requested that GAO "review all necessary files and reports, including those of ERDA, NRC, CIA, and the FBI which are related in any way to the alleged NUMEC diversion.
11 The GAO staff also informed us that they plan to start this assignment immediately and will be contacting appropriate NRC officials. Since GAO has already accomplished a considerable amount of work in this area (Review of MUF data for Congressman Dingell) and have previously made contacts with appropriate NRC officials, no formal entrance conference will be held.
EDO agreed to this approach.
GAO did assure us that they will not expect NRC to supply ERDA, CIA or FBI documents, material or reports, but will obtain them directly from the involved agencies.
