U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Staff Review of the October 2024, U.S. Department of Energy - Office of Legacy Management (DOE-LM) Cover Enhancements at the Rifle, Colorado, Disposal Site, Technical Approach for Pilot Tests
Dear Ms. Young:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is writing in response to the U.S.
Department of Energy, Office of Legacy Management (DOE-LM) document entitled, Cover Enhancements at the Rifle, Colorado, Disposal Site, Technical Approach for Pilot Tests, dated October 2024, (Received November 5, 2024; Agencywide Documents Access and Management System [ADAMS] Package Accession No. ML24309A283). The submittal outlines the different approaches DOE-LM plans to evaluate to improve the water balance performance of the cover by enhancing natural processes. NRC staff participated in a discussion of the proposed pilot testing technical approach on November 7, 2024 with staff from DOE-LM and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
The NRC reviewed the submittal and has no objections to the proposed technical approach for the pilot testing at the Rifle, Colorado, Disposal site. Please keep us informed on the status of the project.
