Vogtle License Renewal Commitment Description
- Commitment item no. 20 of NURE-1920, Safety Evaluation Report Related to the License Renewal of VEGP Units 1 and 2, requires submission of an inspection plan for the reactor internals for review and approval
- Due 24 months prior to entering the periods of extended operation
- Unit 1 PEO begins January 16, 2027
- Unit 2 PEO begins February 8, 2029
- VEGP 1&2 submittal is planned for January 15, 2025 3
Vogtle Unit 1 and 2 Reactor Internals Inspection Plan History
- MRP-227 Rev 1-A NRC approved
- MRP-227 Rev 2 is currently under NRC review
- Vogtle current inspection plans are compliant with MRP-227 Revision 1-A
- Appendix B requires an applicability assessment to ensure that the plant has operated within the specific operational requirements post 30-years of operation
- Vogtle meets the conditions in Appendix B
- Commitment Specifies to address thermal sleeve and core support lug aging:
- Thermal sleeve aging management is in compliance with materials initiative requirements in PWROG-16003, Rev. 2, Appendix A.
- Core support lugs are inspected in accordance with ASME Section XI 10-year B-N visual examinations 4
Vogtle Unit 1 and 2 Reactor Internals Inspection Plan Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) believes that there is not a need for additional staff review and approval of the technical details and/or basis for the VEGP Units 1 and 2 plant specific inspection plans because the technical basis for the scope, periodicity, nondestructive examination requirements, and acceptance criteria are all now generically approved through MRP-227 Revision 1-A.
MRP-227 Revision 2 is currently under review by the NRC. Once approved, Vogtle will update to this revision as outlined in the schedule provided by the EPRI MRP.
Licensing action items associated with Revision 1-A will not be evaluated due to these no longer being required with the expected approval of MRP-227 Revision 2.
SNC intends to outline the above details to satisfy license renewal commitment item no. 20 of NUREG 1920 5
Conclusion The planned submittal fulfills the intent of commitment item 20 from NUREG-1920 When MRP-227 Rev 2 is approved, Vogtle will update its Vogtle Reactor Internals Strategic Plan in accordance with the schedule provided by the EPRI MRP.
If guidance is not implemented in accordance with MRP-227 Rev 2, SNC will submit a deviation in accordance with NEI 03-08.
