OF DECEMBER 5, 2024, MEETING BETWEEN U.S.
NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION STAFF AND U.S.
MARITIME ADMINISTRATION STAFF On December 5, 2024, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a meeting with representatives of the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD). The discussion focused on issuance of the environmental assessment (EA) for the NRCs review of the license termination plan for the Nuclear Ship Savannah, and in particular the deadline pertaining to Section 107(g)(1)(B) of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, as amended (NEPA).
The NRC staff shared with MARAD background information regarding the amendments to NEPA that necessitated the discussion, described recent and upcoming activities to complete the EA, and stated that the EA would be published by December 31, 2024. All meeting participants acknowledged that this date would be the new NEPA deadline. Accordingly, this memorandum documents the NRC staffs consultation with MARAD regarding the NEPA EA deadline consistent with Section 107(g)(2) of NEPA.
