No: 24-080 November 15, 2024 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Issues Final Environmental Impact Statement for Monticello Nuclear Plant Subsequent License Renewal The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has published its final environmental impact statement for the proposed second license renewal for Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant, Unit 1.
The EIS examines the potential environmental impacts of a second (or subsequent) renewal of the license for the reactor in Monticello, Minnesota. The NRC staff concludes there are no adverse environmental impacts to preclude the renewal of Monticellos operating license for an additional 20 years.
Northern States Power Company-Minnesota (doing business as Xcel Energy) is seeking to extend the plants operations from 60 to 80 years. The license for Monticellos boiling-water reactor expires in September 2030. The NRC issued its Safety Evaluation Report for the Monticello subsequent renewal in March 2024.
Information about the Monticello subsequent license renewal review is available on the NRC website.
