Viktoria Mitlyng, 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil, 630-829-9663 NRC Names New Resident Inspector at Donald C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has selected Zackery Helgert as the new resident inspector at the Donald C. Cook nuclear power plant. The two-unit plant in Bridgman, Michigan, is operated by Indiana Michigan Power Co.

Congratulations to Zack on his new position. We are happy to have him join our agency, said NRC Region III Administrator Jack Giessner. As our organization grows, we are pleased to have Zack join the team and serve as the new Cook resident inspector. His NRC training, skillset and knowledge will help us ensure the plant continues to meet the agencys high safety standards.

Helgert joined the NRC in 2022 as part of the NRCs Nuclear Regulator Apprenticeship Network program. He did apprenticeships as a technical reviewer for advanced reactors and shadowed as a reactor and materials inspector. He also spent time as an acting resident inspector for the agency at the Dresden nuclear power plant. Helgert earned a bachelors degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Each U.S. commercial nuclear power plant site in the United States has at least two resident inspectors who monitor day-to-day operations at the plant. They serve as the agencys eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring significant work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public.
