Dear Mr. Finney,
The purpose of this letter is to respond to the referenced American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) letters requesting the inclusion of several ASME Code Cases in draft revision 22 of Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.147, Inservice Inspection Code Case Acceptability, ASME Section XI, Division 1, draft revision 1 of RG 1.246, Acceptability of ASME Code,Section XI, Division 2, Requirements for RIM Programs for NPPs, for Non-LWRS, and the request of endorsement of ASME NUM-1 Rules for Construction Cranes, Monorails and Hoists. You expressed that these Code Cases are of significant benefit to the industry and should be considered for inclusion in the next revisions to the referenced regulatory guides and stated that the new standard was developed to provide design, manufacturing, testing, inspection, shipment, storage and erection requirements for cranes, monorails, and hoists at nuclear facilities.
In response to your request, the NRC will evaluate the inclusion of the code cases in their next revision of these RGs. Since revision 21 of RG 1.147 was published in March 2024, the next scheduled revision will be in 2026. Regarding the next revision of RG 1.246, staff has scheduled to start the process around mid-year 2025. About the endorsement of ASME NUM-1, the staff will consider the standard in their next revision of RG 1.244, which is scheduled to start at the beginning of next calendar year 2025.
