Ms. Reitmeier provided an overview of the organization structure of Native Alaskans and highlighted how it differs from the organization structure of Tribes in the continental U.S. The ANCSA Regional Association represents the 12 Regional Corporations. NRC staff provided background information on the NRC and what we regulate, a high-level overview of NRC licensing including safety and NEPA reviews and conducting National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 consultation through our NEPA review. NRC staff provided high-level information on the NRCs early outreach to Alaskan Native Corporations and the Tanana Chiefs Conference for the Eielson Air Force Base microreactor project, which is still in pre-application status. In response to a question from Mr. Presley, staff gave an overview of the use of nuclear material in Alaska, noting that Alaska is not an Agreement State therefore the NRC regulates the use of nuclear material in Alaska, and that small modular reactors and microreactors could be considered for the State in the future, noting the potential for microreactors to power remote villages.

Takeaway Item: S. Lopas will compile and share with ANCSA a complete list of contacts for the Eielson Air Force base project.

This meeting was a general exchange of information not directly related to any regulatory action or decision.
