- Hello, I would like to recommend my support for the re-licensing of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Facility. As we all know, California consumes a lot of power, and though our renewable capacity is continuing to grow at record rates, we have not yet established reliable, base-line power sources that can run all night long. This is where Nuclear Energy comes in, what amounts to a clean, high capacity power generation mechanism.
In the case of Diablo Canyon, the facility is already built and best management practices are already in place. The carbon that went into building the facility is already in the atmosphere and accounted for. Of course, in light of high profile failures around Nuclear facilities in Japan and elsewhere, the public is highly alert to the dangers of this fuel source, but this should not preclude the incredible usefulness of this high capacity, clean fuel source. In California and elsewhere, we need more Nuclear, not less, to meet growing energy demand domestically and abroad, especially to replace dirty, polluting sources of fuel like Coal and Natural Gas.
Because it often takes 10 years or more, from planning to breaking ground, to build a new nuclear-generating facility, we must look to extending the life of our current nuclear assets, and Diablo Canyon is a prime candidate.
