[External_Sender] NO to extending the Diablo Canyon operating license years beyond it intended end date 18 November 2024 TO: Nuclear Regulatory Commission RE: Needless, dangerous extension of Diablo Canyon operating license California has abundant wind and solar resources and ever more batteries for storing produced energy. To extend the license of this aged-out nuclear power plant would be grossly irresponsible; it would be an unreasonable burden on California taxpayers, and it would hinder Californias shift to clean, safe, renewable energy.

We do not want a Fukushima event on the California coast. The Diablo Canyon plant is built on and adjacent to numerous earthquake faults. To extend its license is to threaten the safety and well-being of millions of people along the coast who would be harmed directly or indirectly should some part of the aging, embrittled plant fail. Its potential harm to California agriculture and fisheries would be immeasurable, although the damage done at Fukushima is relevant. At the least, the NRC should require a new analysis (not 2012 data) for the potential damage to agriculture from a failure of the Diablo Canyon plant.

Diablo Canyon should not have its permit extended because it is out of compliance with the Clean Water Act. Its release of warm water into the Pacific Ocean kills many millions of fish and thus reduces the economic and nutritional benefits of the central California fisheries.

PG&E is a monopoly investor-owned utility whose primary goal is profits for its investors. The safety of millions of Californians should not be left to the will of this entity, which is driven by the funding promised by the governor, and which is relentlessly opposing the rooftop solar industry.

The nuclear industry, in spite of immense public funding, has never achieved a safe, viable plan for the storage of all the radioactive waste its plants produce. This alone is reason, as California voters decided years ago, to cease building new plants and to close existing nuclear power plants.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission should NOT burden California taxpayers with the huge cost of extending this nuclear power plant that is extremely dangerous, potentially in the short term, and certainly in the long term as it accumulates ever more radioactive waste, with no solution to its long term storage.

Sincerely, Charlene M. Woodcock 2355 Virginia Street Berkeley CA 94709
