24.Nov.14.20 NRC public mtg talking points.docx I am writing you again today in support of the proposed extension of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plants operating license. I have visited DCPP in the past as a first responder from the former Pismo Beach Fire Department (now Cal Fire), and I can attest to the safety and security of plant operations. Our fire department toured the plant and participated in presentations from the various plant staffers and operators whom we would be interacting should our assistance be required due to an unplanned event.

I was impressed with the security and safety protocols in place. The staff were knowledgable and the protocols in place were efficient and always erred on the side of safety. I live in the City of Pismo Beach and after our tour I came away with the feeling of confidence that me and my family were safe and that sufficient plans were in place to safely and effectively deal with any plant emergency that may arise.

With the myriad discussions, especially in California, concerning clean energy coupled with the proposed mandates to go electric, it is hard to believe that the continued operation of our primary source of clean energy in California, and the major supplier of electricity in the State is even up for debate.

I encourage the NRC to approve the extension of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plants operating license for the next five years and beyond.

I am attaching a list of talking points, not because you have never heard them, but because I am truly in agreement with each and every one of them.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of DCPPs license extension.

Sincerely, Mark Schmitt, Pismo Beach

Clean Energy I am concerned about climate change and the environment; I think clean nuclear energy has to be a part of our energy future DCPP is the largest clean energy producer in California Over 15% of Californias clean energy If DCPP goes offline, will we have to replace it with greenhouse gasses? San Onofre was replaced with GHG Reliability Can we afford to lose 9% of the electricity produced in California?

Enough electricity to power 3 million Californians It would take 9 square miles of solar panels to produce the same amount of electricity On hot days we already get Flex alerts telling us we might not have enough power, why would we cut off our biggest power source?

Safety DCPP has operated safely and reliably for almost 40 years NRC has a great record of safety oversight I am very comfortable living near DCPP because I know it is safe If applicable: the security at the power plant is unlike anything I have ever seen If applicable: I have seen for myself how they store the used fuel and it is incredibly safe I have heard people ask about earthquakes, this plant is built on such solid ground and the plant is equipped with robust safety features that it is actually the best place in this area to be during an earthquake Environmental Best way to address climate change is clean energy, we need more nuclear, not less DCPP land is beautiful, PG&E does a great job of taking care of the lands They also maintain hiking trails allowing the public access to these beautiful lands Amazing marine wildlife area if applicable: I have been to the plant and seen that it is teeming with marine life, there are sea lions, otters, and birds everywhere Affordability Electricity bills have gone up recently, working families cant afford to pay more for electricity if Diablo goes away CA wants clean power, which is great, but most clean sources are expensive, nuclear is by far the cheapest clean option We have all invested so much in Diablo, the expensive part is building it, continuing to run it is cheap Local Economic Impact PG&E is largest private employer in SLO County Head of household, high paying jobs All of the vendors that PG&E works with to operate the plant creates economic multiplier We just completed a refueling outage which brought a lot of temporary workers into the county and creates major economic impact and there are two more in the coming year The Future We want everybody to drive an electric car by 2035, how are we going to have enough electricity?

City of San Luis Obispo and other cities want to ban gas stoves and change out gas appliances for electrical, we will have to have even more electricity The US was one of 25 countries that pledged to triple nuclear capacity by 2050, how can we do that if we take nuclear plants offline?

California wants to be 100% clean energy, we need nuclear to accomplish that goal Why would we get rid of a safe, clean, reliable power plant that is Californias biggest source of clean energy?

I hear a lot about how technology and AI are going to drive demand for electricity through the roof, how do we meet that demand with clean power that is reliable 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
a day? We have to have nuclear
