STAFF REQUIREMENTS - MEETING WITH THE ORGANIZATION OF AGREEMENT STATES AND THE CONFERENCE OF RADIATION CONTROL PROGRAM DIRECTORS On October 8, 2024, the Commission was briefed by representatives of the Organization of Agreement States and representatives of the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors on radioactive materials policy and regulatory issues of interest to the States. These topics included strengthening ongoing communications and engagement during the rulemaking process; fusion emerging technology; artificial intelligence assistance with state programs including safe radioactive materials inspections and artificial intelligence assistance with potential new challenges in the future; integrated materials performance evaluation program process improvements assessments; emerging reactor technology and small modular reactor reviews; and workforce development related to training: train the trainer.
Given Agreement States interest in state-to-state training, the Commission would like to better understand the expressed needs, training requests, and resource implications for NRC. Toward that end, the staff should provide a Commissioners Assistants note that details training currently provided or funded by NRC, and the pros and cons of expanding these offerings. The CA note should also describe the staffs understanding of Agreement States training interests and needs.
The meeting, which was held in the Commissioners Hearing Room, One White Flint North, Rockville, Maryland at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time, was open to members of the public attending in person and via webcast.
