SUMMARY
OF OCTOBER 8, 2024, PREAPPLICATION MEETING WITH WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY ON AP300 SMALL MODULAR REACTOR EMERGENCY PLANNING ZONE DEFINITION On October 8, 2024, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held a virtual public meeting with Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC). The purpose of the meeting was to hear WECs preapplication description of a future white paper for the AP300 small modular reactor (SMR) on the topic of the AP300 Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ). The AP300 design is largely based on the AP1000 certified design with changes that reflect the smaller power output, lessons learned from the AP1000 construction, and a simplification of features. The public presentation slides for this meeting may be found under Agencywide Documents and Access Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML24276A227. The meeting was divided into two sessions: a public session followed by a closed, proprietary session.
WEC staff presented at both the public and proprietary sessions and during the proprietary session they received NRC staff comments on the proprietary details of their plans.
Preapplication engagements, including this meeting, provide an opportunity for the NRC staff to engage in early discussions with a prospective applicant to offer high-level comments and to identify potential licensing issues early in the licensing process. No official review or evaluation has been completed and no decisions or commitments were made during the preapplication meeting.

When the public attendees were solicited for questions of the NRC staff, no questions were offered.
