Evolving the legacy of DOE/EH-0545 in the DOE Handbook 1220 The general purpose of this presentation is to introduce evolutionary approaches to seismic quali"cation of equipment not found in DOE/EH-0545. This presentation will trace the background of the DOE/EH-0545 methodology which now supports the proposed 1545 handbook. Although the provisions in the 1545 handbook can be appropriate for quali"cation of legacy equipment, new approaches to equipment quali"cation have evolved over the past 30 years since the issuance of DOE/EH-0545. This can make the legacy procedures problematic for application to seismic quali"cation of modern-day equipment and systems. Moreover, the evolution of the practice of earthquake engineering has led to development of several model standards that address behaviors not discussed in DOE/EH-0545.

The presentation will look at new approaches for seismic quali"cation of new and replacement equipment (NARE) using experience-based approaches from EPRI, the EPRI NARE approach with DOE/EH-0545, and by shake table testing. The presentation will include a general discussion about the evaluation of anchorages in accordance with ACI 349. It will also include a brief discussion of using modern-day tank standards like AWWA D100 and API 650 to evaluate "eld erected tanks for seismic loading. There will also be a discussion about approaches to resolving outliers in piping systems and behaviors observed through structural testing.

DOE is interested in the NPH communitys opinion about inclusion of such evolutionary approaches in DOE Handbook 1220. The new provisions of Handbook 1220 would address evolutionary approaches to equipment quali"cation not found in DOE/EH-0545 or the new Handbook 1545.
