[External_Sender] Sturgeon Tissue Samples NJDEP Fish and Wildlife Date: Thursday, July 11, 2024 12:17:00 PM Attachments: image001.png EXTERNAL RE Fish Screens.msg

Good Afternoon Lynn -

I was contacted by Joseph Groff of NJDEP Fish and Wildlife asking about potentially getting sturgeon tissue and organ samples from freshly dead sturgeon collected at the Salem intake structure. He mentioned that he spoke with you and that he is now on a notification list of sturgeon takes.

Heather Corbett from NJDEP referred him to me. Salem is happy to work with Joseph on this however I wanted to ensure that NOAA and NMFS were okay with this type of arrangement?

Nothing has been finalized and we discussed what he was looking for in terms of samples and the logistics that would need to be worked out with getting the fish to him.

I am looking for concurrence from you that this is something of value and that it would be beneficial to proceed with this partnership. We would continue to conduct the initial onsite processing and reporting prior to transferring the fish to him.

Please let me know if this is acceptable or if this is something that we should hold off on for now.

Thank you.

Sincerely, Ron

Ronald,

Thanks for the response. My intention is to supplement our NJ salvage sturgeon with those available from your facility. I have registered with NOAA to be included on the list to be notified of dead sturgeon that are available for salvage, and do not need an additional permit or approval. However, I am interested in getting tissues for pathogen (especially viral) isolation and identification, but not for genetic work. In that context, we would like to be on-site when you examine/clean your screens or be notified if you have relatively fresh salvage sturgeon so we can examine the fish and take the appropriate samples.

Let me know if you have questions or need to discuss this further.

Thanks!

[EXTERNAL] RE: Fish Screens

Hello Mr. Groff, Thank you for your message. We collect fin clips from all collected sturgeon deceased or alive that are collected at the intake structure or during field collections from bottom trawling. In the past I believe we have sent the preserved fin clips to the USGS Atlantic and Shortnose Sturgeon Tissue Repository located in Leetown, WV.

We can continue to do that if that is helpful to you however we were looking for concurrence from the agency before we went ahead and sent those. If you would like the clips for your own agency research we could certainly do that as well assuming the NMFS was aligned.

Please feel free to reach out as we could have a Teams call or other type of call. I am available today, potentially tomorrow and in the morning on Friday if you would like to discuss further. My cell number is also located below in the signature.

Thanks Ron

Hi Ronald,

I was given your contact information by our Marine Fisheries office in Nacote Creek. I am in search of tissue samples from sturgeon salvaged from your screens. Of course, these fish cannot be in the process of decomposition for our sturgeon disease screening purposes. But, I am hoping we can discuss this in more detail at your convenience.

Thank you!
