OF THE AUGUST 9, 2024, PARTIALLY CLOSED MEETING FOR ENERGY NORTHWEST TO PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF THEIR PLANNED XE-100 SMALL MODULAR REACTOR PROJECT Meeting Information:
On August 9, 2024, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a public meeting with Energy Northwest (EN) staff to discuss ENs approach for their Small Modular Reactor Project, in support of a construction permit application for power reactors. S. Philpott Meeting Summary:
The NRC staff began the meeting with introductions and explained that a portion of the meeting would be closed to the public to discuss proprietary information.
During the open portion of the meeting, EN initiated the discussion with a brief overview of their company and current power generation projects including the Columbia Generating Station.
EN discussed the regional energy resource challenges and how this project is synchronized with Federal and State initiatives.
EN is proposing the Xe-100 Small Modular Reactor be built on the Hanford Reservation near Richland, WA on the site of the former WNP-1/WNP-4 projects.
ENs project licensing approach is to use the 10 CFR Part 50 process to request a Construction Permit and Operating License.
In addition to NRC licensing, EN requires a lease amendment for the Department of Energy and a Washington Site Certification Agreement.
At the conclusion of the open portion of the meeting, the public was invited to make comments or ask questions of the NRC staff. No comments or questions from members of the public were received.
During the closed portion of the meeting, EN discussed their project partners, funding, schedule, and licensing.
No regulatory decisions were made as a result of this meeting.
