U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Public Meeting Summary August 15, 2024
Title:
Public Meeting to Discuss the Categorical Exclusions from Environmental Review Proposed Rulemaking Date: July 31, 2024 Location: Webinar Category: Category 3 Purpose of the Meeting: The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRC) proposed rulemaking for the Categorical Exclusions from Environmental Review to help facilitate stakeholder input.
General Details: The meeting was attended by 19 NRC staff and 18 members of the public.
Summary of NRC Presentation: The NRC staff presented background and an overview of the proposed rule, followed by a question-and-answer session. The overview described the proposed reorganization of the existing categorical exclusions and the six new proposed categorical exclusions. The staff reviewed the various methods for the public to submit their comments.
Summary of Public Feedback: Participants included representatives from the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI); the office of Senator Markey and Westinghouse Electric Company. Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to meet to discuss the potential rulemaking and to ask questions about the proposed rule. An NEI representative stated that NEI is in the process of developing a complete set of comments for submittal.
Action Items/Next Steps:
The staff will consider, to the extent possible, public feedback received to inform the development of the final rule. The public comment period ends on September 16, 2024.
