Our regulations allow for drones to be used as part of a plants overall safety program -
supporting the use of new technology to maintain safety. Our resident inspectors often watch plant staff conduct inspections using drones to check structures and systems important to safety.

Region I Nuclear Materials Inspector Hiba Ahmed was #OntheJob at a radiopharmacy, where she checked the packaging of nuclear medicine bound for a hospital. Hiba confirmed that the packaging was compliant with Department of Transportation requirements for shipping.

Our Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response, was created on April 7, 2002, after 9/11.
Today, NSIR leads our incident response program, coordinates with the intelligence community on threat assessment, participates in international security efforts, and much more!

Several nuclear power plants were in the path of totality" during the solar eclipse today. As always, our inspectors kept watch on safe plant operations no matter what was happening overhead. (At HQ in Maryland, we also took a minute to watch the sky.)

We held a historic meeting on board the Nuclear Ship Savannah, to accept public comments on the vessels License Termination Plan. The Savannah was defueled in 1971 and its reactor vessel removed at the end of 2022. Find the License Termination Plan at:

- AtlanticHurricaneSeason. It includes foul-weather gear, blankets, pillows and other items to keep our inspectors dry while theyre onsite monitoring plant conditions during a storm.
June 4, 2024 Region I's Michael Ordoyne is one of our security inspectors #OnTheJob overseeing nuclear plants, research and test reactors, nuclear fuel cycle facilities and other facilities using radioactive materials. For more info check out:

New Region I Inspector Joe Cunningham suited up with other NRC inspectors to enter the reactor containment unit at the Beaver Valley nuclear plant. This area is only accessible when the reactor is not generating power, such as during a refueling and maintenance outage.

Ray McKinley, a senior manager from Region I, put eyes on the high-pressure coolant injection system while he was #OnTheJob at the Susquehanna nuclear plant. This system helps cool down the reactor core by pumping cooling water quickly and efficiently into the vessel.
