SUMMARY
OF MAY 17, 2024, MEETING WITH UNIVERSITY OF UTAH On May 17, 2024, an Observation public meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and representatives of the University of Utah, TRIGA Nuclear Reactor. The meeting was conducted virtually to discuss the proposed exemption request to requalification requirements for licensed reactor operators at the University of Utah.
The meeting notice and agenda, dated May 3, 2024, are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System at Accession No. ML24124A083. A list of meeting attendees is provided as an enclosure to this summary.
During the meeting, the University of Utah staff discussed the need for an exemption to requalification requirements in order to perform maintenance at the facility. This discussion was prompted by the submittal of an exemption request by the University of Utah dated February 27, 2024 (ML24088A015).
The NRC staff discussed with the licensee about its current exemption request under review based on the needs that were described to the NRC staff. The licensee plans on withdrawing its current request (ML24088A015) and submit a new exemption request. The licensee will be requesting an expedited review since it cannot perform maintenance on the reactor tank until the exemption request is approved.
No public comments were received during this meeting. The meeting adjourned at 11:20 am Eastern Time.
