[External_Sender] Comments on Monticello Nuclear Reactor License Extension-NRC-2023-0031
Dear NRC RE:
Monticello Reactor Jessica Umana,
Dear NRC,
Please extend the public comment period for the Draft SEIS and consider denying Northern States Power Minnesota's application for a second license renewal of the Monticello reactor.
The reactor continues to release radiation into the drinking water, exemplified by the 829,000-gallon leak of radioactive tritium-contaminated wastewater, some of which, according to the Draft SEIS, was discharged into the Mississippi River.
The Mississippi River serves as a drinking water source for the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area and for 20 million people downstream, making the repeated radioactive contamination of groundwater that feeds into the Mississippi River a significant concern highlighted in the Draft SEIS.
The "2022 Annual Radioactive Effluent Release Report" from May 10, 2023, acknowledges several pathways for public radiation exposure, including the ingestion of radionuclides in food or water.
Despite NSPM/Xcel's assurances of "no health risk" due to "very low levels" of tritium in the affected groundwater, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's website indicates that any radiation may pose a cancer risk, with higher doses correlating to increased risk.
Sincerely, Gary Gover 300 Lincoln St Fairhope, AL 36532
