A license extension for the Monticello nuclear reactor owned by Xcel Energy should not happen. Recent revelations of a massive 829,000-gallon radioactive leak and Xcel's inadequate response should disqualify any consideration for extending the reactor's license.
This radioactive contamination poses a significant threat to public health, the environment, and the Mississippi River ecosystem. Tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen found in the leaked water, can cross the placenta, increasing the risk of birth defects and cancer. Additionally, other radioactive chemicals in the wastewater pose similar risks to those seen in nuclear disasters like Chornobyl and Fukushima.
Xcel's plan to continue operating the Monticello reactor until it is 80 years old is reckless and ignores the numerous age-related issues identified by federal regulators. We cannot afford to prioritize profits over public health and safety.
I urge the NRC to reject Xcel's application for a license extension for the Monticello reactor.
